What is Selection Day?
At LIS we know you’re more than just your grades. Our Selection Day is designed to help us understand:
- Who you are – your interests and what motivates you.
- How you think – how you approach problems, how you handle new information, and how you express yourself.
We use this information, together with your grades (which we look at in the context of your background), to determine whether LIS is the right fit for you. Selection Days are also an opportunity for you to get to know us and ask us any questions.
Our Selection Days are conducted online and will take no more than 1 hour and 35 minutes of your time.
You don’t need to prepare; just be yourself. It’s a chance for us to get to know you, for you to get to know us, and hopefully learn more about yourself along the way.
What can I expect on Selection Day?
You’ll be welcomed by a member of the team who will help guide you through the online structure of Selection Day. You’ll then take part in two interviews. You don’t need to prepare anything for either of the interviews, we are interested to know more about who you are and understand how you think.
Interview 1 – Getting to know you
The clue is in the title! You’ll have a conversation with a member of the LIS team to talk about who you are, and what some of your passions and interests are.
Interview 2 – Thinking through a problem
The interview will include a short reading and written task followed by the opportunity to talk through the problem with a member of the LIS faculty. This is the part of Selection Day that will really help us to understand how you think.
Setting up for your Selection Day
A laptop or tablet – it's important that you have a large enough screen to read materials online that will be shared with you during the interview.
A quiet space – we don’t want you to risk being distracted during your interview so try and find a quiet space.
Internet connection – your internet connection will need to be able to support your video and audio being on for the Selection Day. You should test before your Selection Day, to make sure it works.
Download Zoom – Selection Days are hosted on Zoom so you will need to have the app downloaded to your laptop or tablet before the interview.
Pen and paper – there will be a short written exercise during the interview so make sure you have a pen and paper available.
Joining your Selection Day
You’ll be sent an email with a Zoom link that will allow you to access your interview. Simply open up the email (if it’s not in your inbox, remember to check your junk mail) and find the button that says ‘Join your Selection Day’. You should aim to be in the waiting room 15 minutes before your interview.
When the Selection Day starts, you’ll join an LIS team member and a small group of applicants in the main room. Make sure you have your cameras on.
LIS commits to ensuring that all individuals are treated equitably, regardless of gender, race or ethnicity, socio-economic background, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, marital status, pregnancy or maternity, or any other inappropriate distinction.
If you have additional requirements for online platforms (for example, if you do not have access to a laptop/tablet, a quiet space and/or an internet connection) please let us know by emailing email@example.com and we will make arrangements for you.
If you have disclosed a disability, specific learning difference or medical condition in your application form, we will invite you to discuss any necessary and appropriate reasonable adjustments. If you have not disclosed, then we encourage you to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org so that we can make any reasonable adjustments.

Will I be interviewed with other applicants?
Other applicants will not be present at your interviews. You will be sent to a breakout room with either a LIS team or faculty member.
Can I join the Selection Day on my phone?
You will need to be able to read materials during the interview, therefore we would recommend using a tablet or a laptop during the Selection Day. If you don’t have access to a laptop/tablet or to an internet connection, please let us know at email@example.com and we will make arrangements for you.
What happens if my internet drops off during the internet?
Don’t panic. Simply click on your Selection Day link to join when you’ve reconnected, and you’ll be able to re-join where a member of the LIS team will be able help you.
How many other applicants will there be on the Selection Day?
There will be no more than four other applicants on the call for the whole of the Selection Day. Different members of the LIS team will join the Selection Day when they join for the interviews.
